Corporate Tax for Clinics in the UAE: Rates, Relief and Deadlines
Short answer: Corporate tax for clinics in the UAE works the same way as for any other business: 0% on the first AED 375,000 of taxable income and 9% on the rest. A clinic company must register with the FTA, file a return within nine months of its year end and keep proper accounts. A small clinic with revenue of AED 3 million or less can elect Small Business Relief, which now covers tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029 after Ministerial Decision No. 131 of 2026 extended it.
Last verified: October 2026 against FTA guidance on Small Business Relief and the taxation of natural persons, FTA Decision No. 3 of 2024 on registration timelines, Ministerial Decision No. 73 of 2023, Ministerial Decision No. 131 of 2026 and Cabinet Decision No. 10 of 2024. Tax rules change, so check the FTA website or EmaraTax before you file.
Key Takeaways
- The rate is 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% on the portion above it. There is no special healthcare rate.
- A new clinic company has three months from incorporation to register for corporate tax. Late registration carries an AED 10,000 penalty.
- A doctor who owns a clinic in their own name is taxed as a natural person once business turnover passes AED 1 million in a calendar year. A doctor’s salary from employment is not subject to corporate tax.
- Small Business Relief needs revenue of AED 3 million or less in the current and every earlier tax period, and you still have to file a return to claim it.
- For a clinic with a calendar year end, 2029 is now the last year Small Business Relief applies, after the Ministry of Finance extended it by three years in August 2026. Plan the 2030 budget with tax in it.

Who Pays Corporate Tax in a Clinic Business
How corporate tax for clinics applies depends on who holds the licence, not on the fact that you provide healthcare.
| Set Up | How Corporate Tax Applies | Registration Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Clinic run through a company (for example an LLC, mainland or free zone) | The company is a taxable person from its first tax period | Three months from incorporation, for companies set up on or after 1 March 2024 |
| Clinic licensed in a doctor’s own name | Taxable only once turnover from the business passes AED 1 million in a calendar year | 31 March of the following year |
| Doctor or nurse employed on a salary | Wages are outside corporate tax | No corporate tax registration for the salary |
The FTA’s own guide on natural persons uses a physiotherapist as an example. He holds a UAE licence and runs his own clinic, so he is a resident person carrying on a business. Fees he earns from treating patients referred by centres in other Gulf countries count towards his UAE turnover, because that work comes from the UAE practice. Income from a separate clinic he keeps in his home country does not.
The AED 1 million test is about turnover, not profit, so a busy one doctor practice can cross it quickly. Once it does, the tax itself is still worked out on taxable income, with the same 0% band on the first AED 375,000.
How Much Corporate Tax a Clinic Pays
Corporate tax for clinics is calculated on accounting profit adjusted for tax rules, not on revenue. As a simple illustration, a clinic company with taxable income of AED 1,000,000 pays nothing on the first AED 375,000 and 9% on the remaining AED 625,000, which is AED 56,250 for the year.
In our experience the numbers that move a clinic’s tax bill most are the ones owners set up loosely in the first year:
- Partner and doctor pay. Salaries under an employment contract are a normal business cost. Profit shares and drawings by owners are not the same thing, so agree in writing how each doctor is paid.
- Related party charges. Rent paid to an owner’s property company, management fees between group clinics and shared staff costs need to be at arm’s length and documented.
- Fit-out and equipment. These are capital costs, so they reduce taxable income through depreciation over time, not all in the year you pay.
- Insurance receivables. Income is generally counted when earned, so rejected or unpaid claims need a clear write-off policy rather than sitting in the books for years.
Small Business Relief for Small Clinics
Small Business Relief is the biggest question in corporate tax for clinics that are still small. It lets a resident business, a company or a natural person, be treated as having no taxable income for a tax period. To elect it, revenue must be AED 3,000,000 or less in that period and in every earlier one. Ministerial Decision No. 73 of 2023 applies the relief to tax periods starting on or after 1 June 2023. It originally ended with periods ending on or before 31 December 2026, and Ministerial Decision No. 131 of 2026 extended it to tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029. The AED 3 million limit did not change.
Three conditions catch clinic owners out:
- One bad year ends it. The FTA’s own example is a business with revenue of AED 4.3 million in 2025 that cannot elect for 2026, even though its 2026 revenue drops to AED 1.9 million.
- You still file. In an August 2026 release the FTA confirmed that eligible businesses must still submit a return, on time, and make the election in it. The return is a simplified one.
- You give up other reliefs. A business that elects the relief cannot use other exemptions, reliefs or deductions for that period. A Qualifying Free Zone Person cannot elect it at all.
If your clinic is near the AED 3 million line, it is worth modelling both routes. A clinic with a loss in a year may be better off not electing, so it can use that loss later. That is a judgement for your accounts, not a default.
Registration, Returns and Penalties
- Register on EmaraTax. A clinic company set up on or after 1 March 2024 has three months from incorporation. A doctor trading in their own name has until 31 March after the calendar year their turnover passed AED 1 million. Cabinet Decision No. 10 of 2024 set the late registration penalty at AED 10,000.
- Keep proper books from day one. Separate clinic and personal accounts, keep invoices and insurer remittances, and reconcile your practice management system to your accounts every month.
- File and pay within nine months. The return and any tax due are due within nine months of the end of the tax period. For a 31 December 2025 year end, the FTA set the deadline as 30 September 2026.
Corporate tax for clinics sits alongside VAT, which has its own registration and rules for healthcare. Most medical services are zero rated, but not all, so the two systems need to agree with each other. Our guide to VAT on healthcare services covers that side.
Frequently Asked Questions.
Do clinics pay corporate tax in the UAE?
Yes. Healthcare has no special exemption. A clinic company pays 0% on the first AED 375,000 of taxable income and 9% above that, unless it qualifies for and elects Small Business Relief.
Does a doctor pay corporate tax on their salary?
No. The FTA treats a wage under an employment contract as outside corporate tax. A doctor who runs their own licensed practice is different and becomes taxable once business turnover passes AED 1 million in a calendar year.
Is Small Business Relief available after 2026?
Yes. Ministerial Decision No. 131 of 2026, announced by the Ministry of Finance on 7 August 2026, extended the relief to tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029. The AED 3 million revenue limit and the other conditions are unchanged, and you still have to elect it in your return.
What is the penalty for late corporate tax registration?
AED 10,000, under Cabinet Decision No. 10 of 2024, which took effect on 1 March 2024. Late filing and late payment carry separate penalties.
