How Gratuity Works for Healthcare Professionals
If you work for a private hospital, clinic, pharmacy, lab or medical centre, your end of service gratuity follows Article 51 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, the UAE Labour Law, the same as any other private sector employee. These are the rules as the official UAE government portal sets them out:
- You need at least one year of continuous service. Days of unpaid absence are not counted.
- For each of the first five years you receive 21 days of your basic wage, and 30 days for each year after that.
- Part years are paid in proportion to the time served, once you have completed one year.
- Only your basic salary counts. Allowances such as housing, transport and utilities are not included, so check the basic figure in your contract rather than your total package.
- The total can never be more than two years of wage.
- Your employer must pay your end of service dues within 14 days of the contract ending, and may deduct amounts you owe them.
Part time and locum style contracts are paid in proportion to the contracted hours compared with full time hours (Article 30 of Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022). The normal full time week in the private sector is 8 hours a day or 48 hours a week. UAE nationals receive end of service benefits under the pensions and social security law instead. If your employer has joined the alternative savings scheme (Cabinet Resolution No. 96 of 2023), you receive that savings balance for the period it covers.
This calculator is for the private sector. If you work for a government hospital or health authority, your end of service rules come from your employer's government HR law, so ask your HR team. DIFC and ADGM also have their own employment laws.
This calculator takes your daily basic wage as your monthly basic salary divided by 30, and counts one year as 365 days of service.

Worked Examples
A Staff Nurse After 4 Years
Basic salary AED 6,000 a month, so the daily basic wage is AED 200. Four years at 21 days a year is 84 days, which comes to AED 16,800.
A Specialist Doctor After 8 Years
Basic salary AED 30,000 a month, so the daily basic wage is AED 1,000. The first five years give 105 days and the next three years give 90 days. In total that is 195 days, or AED 195,000.
A Part Time Doctor After 3 Years
Basic salary AED 20,000 a month on a contract of 24 hours a week where full time is 48. A full time employee would receive 63 days, which is AED 42,000. Half the hours means half of that, so AED 21,000.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do shift allowances or overtime count towards a nurse's gratuity?
No. Gratuity is based on basic salary only, so allowances are not part of the calculation.
Do part time and locum doctors get gratuity?
Yes, on a part time contract of at least one year. The benefit is the full time amount multiplied by your contracted hours as a share of full time hours.
Does unpaid leave reduce my gratuity?
Yes. Days of unpaid absence are not counted as service, so they are taken out before the gratuity is worked out.
Do I get gratuity if I resign to join another hospital?
The official rules link gratuity to completing at least one year of continuous service and do not set a lower rate for resignation, so the same 21 and 30 day rates apply.
Does this apply to government hospital staff?
No. Staff of government hospitals and health authorities follow their employer's government HR rules. This calculator covers private sector employers under the UAE Labour Law.
